Skin peels

What is a peel?

Over time, dead skin cells tend to build up on the surface of our skin, leading to a dull complexion, uneven texture, and other concerns. A skin peel is a treatment that removes the top layer of the skin, revealing younger, fresher skin, thereby leading to a visibly improved appearance. Not only does this skin look better, the removal of the layer of dead cells permits the active ingredients in good skin care penetrate the skin more efficiently, thereby enhancing the results of the bespoke skin-care regime (which we are of course delighted to design for you!)

Peels are categorised by their depth: superficial, medium and deep. As a rule, the deeper the peel, the more dramatic an improvement is seen. The trade-off is a longer down-time, as the skin heals and rejuvenates.

At Fitzgerald Plastic Surgery, we offer the full range of peels, as in-office treatments, or in combination with aesthetic surgical procedures. A consultation is always required before a peel can be carried out. The lighter peels can usually be carried out on the day of your consultation, whilst the deeper peels commonly require preparation of your skin with specific products for a few weeks in advance of treatment.

Enzyme peel

This is the mildest form of peel we offer. They can be used on virtually all skin types, and provide a fresh appearance to the skin, with minimal down-time. More radiant skin, with slight redness, can be expected after this treatment. A series of treatments is usually required for the best results.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels vary in strength and depth. We offer a range of peels, and you will be guided during your consultation to the best type to address your concerns. Common concerns include dull complexion, uneven skin texture, lines and wrinkles, acne and hyperpigmentation.

Our selection of peels includes the following:

Medik8 Peels

These are well-tolerated, low-irritation peels. Following treatment, you can expect to look a little sunburned, and to experience a light peeling that lasts 2-3 days. Different options exist, depending on your concerns.

Medik8 White Peel

White Peel is the most effective way to achieve brighter and even skin-tone free from dark spots and hyperpigmentation, to renovated skin layers and prevent darkening of new skin cells.

Medik8 Beta Peel

Similar to the Obagi Radiance Peel, the Medik8 Beta peel rapidly brings acne under control, thereby dramatically reducing the risk of future scarring. Beta Peel counteracts all three causes of acne by targeting each assault individually blocked pores, bacterial infection and inflammation.

Obagi Medical™ In-office treatments

Obagi Signature Facial™

The Signature Facial is specially customised for your skin after a thorough consultation and skin analysis, and includes deep pore cleansing, exfoliation, and moisturization steps to help revitalize and improve your complexion. This facial makes a great stand-alone treatment, or can be used to gently kick-start you into your prescription Obagi Medical™ skincare regime.

Depending on your skincare needs, a bespoke cocktail of skincare hero ingredients such as vitamin C, vitamin A, or pigment-fighting ingredients such as arbutin or hydroquinone, can be used as part of this treatment, when your skin is open and receptive to these nourishing ingredients.

Obagi Enrich Facial™ (Radiance Peel)

The Enrich Facial includes the Obagi Radiance Peel. This is a specially-formulated blend of acids, designed to gently exfoliate, treat acne, and leave your skin bright and radiant. Your skin will feel tighter and glowing, and appear radiant immediately after treatment, and for the next 24 hours. You can then expect to experience a light peeling.

This treatment is excellent for quickly and effectively drying up spots and acne, and is highly recommended both at the start, and during the course of use of at-home skincare regimes such as Obagi NuDerm™ or Clenziderm MD™ systems.

Obagi Blue Peel™

This is a medium-depth peel, based around TCA (trichloroacetic acid). A powerful treatment, it may require numbing injections, and some patients will opt to have this treatment done whilst under general anaesthetic for another procedure (e.g. breast or abdominal surgery). Preparation of the skin using Obagi Medical™ products is required both before, and after treatment, in order to optimise the result. This peel can be used to treat the following:

  • Stretchable wrinkles, skin laxity and scars
  • Actinic keratosis
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Melasma and stubborn pigmentation
  • Severe photodamage
  • Large pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

Obagi Blue Peel™ plus fractional CO2 laser resurfacing

The combination of the Blue Peel and fractional CO2 laser offers the possibility of the firming effects of the Blue Peel together with the levelling effects of the CO2 laser. The addition of the CO2 laser allows for treatment of significant lines and wrinkles, and substantial skin tightening.

This procedure usually requires a general anaesthetic, and can be combined with other aesthetic procedures such as breast or abdominal surgery. It is performed by Ms Fitzgerald, at the Beacon Hospital (rather than in our office). Skin preparation with prescription skincare products, and a commitment to the use of these products after treatment is required.
